Bread
2024

Bread, rations and women at work were common after WWII in France. Women were working to provide for themselves and their families. The ephemera postcards were found at a Saturday open air market in the park in France. They were among dozens of postcards of men on ships, men about town in top hats and suites, men in front of stores with wagons full of goods and modern marvels like hot air ballons, airplanes and the Model T. These women stood on their own as gypsies, farmers, prohibitions and entertainers. Each of these women were doing what they could to make enough to live. The foundation of each piece is a ration card for a loaf of bread. The women are bound to this ticket. It is physically connecting them to dependence on someone other than themselves to survive regardless of what they do.
